Coiled Tubing Hydraulic Tubing Cutting Case

In the XH-243X HPHT deep well, ASBR deployed a hydraulic anchor and hydraulic cutter on coiled tubing to cut 2.875 in P110 upset tubing and create the conditions for subsequent workover recovery.

Process and Field Case

Coiled Tubing Hydraulic Tubing Cutting Case

The XH-243X well is an HPHT deep vertical well with a measured bottom depth of 5690 m, maximum temperature of 165.96 ℃, formation pressure of 58.98 MPa, and maximum inclination of 20.24°. The job objective was to cut 2.875 in P110 upset tubing downhole.

Objective: cut 2.875 in P110 upset tubing.
Depth: CT reached 5372.82 m and cutting was performed after pulling up to 5360.31 m.
Result: 90 min cutting time, 55 T workover unit pull test, tubing recovered.

Challenge

The well depth, temperature, and pressure placed high demands on tool stability and cutting reliability. The target tubular was 2.875 in P110 upset tubing, and the operation required stable anchoring, controlled internal cutting, and a reliable pull-out condition after the cut.

Tool String

The cutting BHA from top to bottom included a 50.8 mm dimple connector, crossovers, 43 mm check valve, 44 mm hydraulic anchor, crossover, 54 mm mud motor, crossover, and 44 mm hydraulic cutter. The anchor provided stability during cutting, while the cutter performed internal tubing cutting.

Operation

The coiled tubing was run to 5372.82 m and encountered resistance near the circulation sleeve. It was then pulled up to 5360.31 m for cutting. A 1.33 g/cm³ CaCl2 fluid was used, with flow rate of 60-130 L/min. Total cutting time was 90 min, and cutting pressure ranged from 12.4 to 32.4 MPa.

Result

After the tool string was pulled out, cutter blade extension was checked at approximately 13 mm and 16 mm. The workover unit performed a 55 T pull test, the tubing was recovered, and the cutting operation was successful. The case demonstrates ASBR hydraulic anchor and cutter performance in a deep HPHT coiled tubing cutting application.
