Ultra-short Radius Horizontal Well Drilling Case

ASBR ultra-short radius mud motors were applied in Well Y9-X21 for an ultra-short radius horizontal well field trial. The 2° and 3° motors delivered high build-rate drilling, with maximum build rate reaching 154°/30 m.

Ultra-short radius mud motor application in a high build-rate horizontal well

This case comes from an ultra-short radius horizontal well drilling and completion field trial. ASBR ultra-short radius mud motors use a modular motor design for short-radius, high build-rate, and small-hole applications, supporting rapid trajectory turn and stable drilling.

Condition and objective

The well was an ultra-short radius horizontal well field trial. The objective was to verify higher build-rate mud motors for short-radius trajectory control, while maintaining drilling footage and trajectory stability in limited wellbore space.

Tool configuration

The tools use a modular motor design with short structure, short bend geometry, and higher torque output for high build-rate drilling in ultra-short radius horizontal wells.

Two drilling runs

The first run used the 2° motor with a 21 h drilling cycle, ending depth of 1579.7 m, 15.1 m footage, 18.4 h on-bottom drilling time, 0.82 m/h average ROP, 92°/30 m maximum build rate, and 32.03 m average curvature radius. The second run used the 3° motor with a 19.4 h drilling cycle, final depth of 1594.2 m, 14.5 m footage, 10.9 h on-bottom drilling time, 1.33 m/h average ROP, 154°/30 m maximum build rate, and 19.84 m average curvature radius.

Result review

The field application showed that ASBR ultra-short radius mud motors can meet high build-rate requirements in ultra-short radius horizontal wells. The 3° motor achieved a maximum build rate of 154°/30 m, providing field reference for mature-well sidetracking, short-radius trajectory adjustment, and complex wellbore drilling.
